March 23, 2012The Best From the Web: Networking Advice
One great way to generate business is through referrals. After all, the best salesman for your business is a satisfied customer.
You can supercharge your referrals by networking. Literally joining networking groups through a variety of organizations, including:
- Your local chamber of commerce
- Business Networking International (BNI)
- City networking groups (do a Google search for “[your city name] business networking”)
As you begin to network, keep in mind that you should position yourself as an expert — nobody knows as much about caring for their car as you do.
The basic rule about establishing your reputation is simple, says Scott Allen in an article on Business.com,: “If you want to be perceived as an expert, act like a true expert.”
So how do real experts act?
For one thing, says Allen “They’re extremely careful about what they say: They know that people are paying attention to them, and that has two consequences.
First of all, they know that their reputation is on the line every time they open their mouth — that everything they say will be subject to scrutiny. Secondly, they also know that people will put a lot of weight into what they say and probably act upon it, so they feel a strong sense of responsibility to provide good information.”
Sound like what you come up against when someone asks you about a product, or a material, or a cleaning technique?
In any case, you can boost your business by joining a local networking group — and then participating. Almost every busy business owner needs your services — they know the value of maintaining the appearance of their vehicles, and they’ll turn to you if you position yourself as a true professional.
